Well Mom found them with the help of some strangers who spotted them yesterday. It took an hour and a half at lunchtime and they had been running in a 5 mile radius for 2 days. They are both exhausted and sore. Fanny won't let Mom touch her feet, she growls so you know she doesn't feel good. Starry's hind quarters are lame. She looks just like she did when she first got here all sick and everything. Mom had to carry Starry in from the car.
Mom had to brush all the burrs out of Starry and she had to pick some out of Fanny's skin. Mom did find a open sore on Starry's hind foot, but other than that they don't have any other wounds.
They had definately gotten lost in the woods. Instead of going south off Kathy's land they had gone north. Until they were sighted yesterday they had been out of range of Mom's whistle. Since Fanny is a runner, Mom had taughter her to come to a whistle, good thing too. Starry is partially deaf so she never would have heard Mom calling, but she can hear the loud whistle.
The people who helped Mom find them said they saw them cross the busy country highway and almost get hit by a semi. Fanny stopped at the last minute and Starry did everything that Fanny told her to do. Undoubtably, that is why Starry is still alive. The good people also said that they got close to them at one point but then Fanny ran off and Starry followed. Starry usually is very people friendly.
Mom is amazed at how Fanny took care of Starry and how Starry obeyed her. Fanny is a rescue hero. But I think this is definately Mom's best rescue of all.
I hope with lots of rest and good food and water that they will both be back to their normal selves. For now Mom has been giving them some pain medicine. They both have very sore muscles, Starry can go upstairs to sleep on her own power now..that is a big improvement.
Lastly, a big thank you to my friends. Thank you for your prayers and good wishes. You guys are awesome. Mom is planning to give the good people a reward for their help. She was thinking about sending flowers and a giftcard to a steakhouse. Plus she is taking Kathy out to their favorite Chinese restaurant. This never would have happened if Kathy hadn't put a sign out on the country highway. What do you guys think she should do for them?

I am so glad this story has a happy - albeit sore - ending! Unbelievable about Fanny helping Starry!

I think what your mom is doing is for your friends is just fine.
I am so glad everyone is home safe and sound. No more adventures!
Thanks guys. Things are starting to return to normal. Starry is able to lift her tail and wag it and Fanny is a little more like herself. She still doesn't want Mom to touch her feet. But we are all certainly happier. Fanny never goes very far from Starry...guess they are best buds now. I can certainly understand that. I hope I never get lost.

Thank goodness they are found. I hope that Fanny and Starry will rest well and recover soon

whew--so glad to hear they made it home and only a little worse for the wear (big semis are scary!).
it's amazing how resiliant we dogs are, huh? hearing about how starry and fanny took care of each other is pretty cool.
wally.
Hey Wally,
Yes, it is very amazing how resilient we dogs are. I'm glad I've never had to deal with frightening situations that Mom rescues from...but it is pretty amazing how nice the dogs are that Mom rescues..even after the horror they've been through.
Mom is so pleased that Duncan no longer flinches when she reaches for his head to pet him. Remember my friend Zoe, the Eskie, that Mom rescued? She had been kept in her crate 24 hours a day for so long that her white fur had turned yellow from sitting in her own waste. Yet she was the nicest girl, I REALLY liked her..and was so sorry to see her go, although she went to a great home with a eskie sister.
Mom and I are still pretty impressed with how Fanny took care of Starry.

I'm so happy to hear Fanny and Starry don't seem to be in any kind of serious condition. It is indeed amazing how we behave without hooman guidance. I'm sure that must have been a huge relieve to your mama.
All the best to you guys,
Miss Sunshade
Yahoo!! All the pup-a-dups at our house are so happy they are back. Pippin sends lots of little kisses to your mom since she knows your mom likes that
Hamish (Pip's little brother)
What a happy ending.
I forgot to say, I don't know about the other dogs but I think those nice people that helped your Mom find them would like a steak dinner. A card and dinner would be nice, but I would skip the flowers. Give them a picture of all of you, that would be nice, so that they know how much your Mom loves dogs.
Wow, that must have been scary for everyone when Fanny and Starry were gone. We are glad that they are back home safe and without major injuries. It was so nice of Fanny to take care of Starry.
Whenever a dog is running around our street without a human, we bark like crazy so our girl can go out to help them find their person. I bet the nice people who helped you have a dog that told them that Fanny and Starry were lost.
Wow - I'm off the computer for a week and look what happens! I am really glad that everyone is back home safe and sound. Mom once had 2 Samoyeds who ran away for days and days. They finally got caught when they killed some chickens for dinner. It wasn't self-serve I suppose.
Wow!!! Thank goodness!! You are reunited once again!
Thanks God everybody now can celebrate Christmas together!
Losing a pet is the worse thing because of the uncertainty. My mom lost her first bird, and almost lost me once. I think the dinner & flowers will be nice for your friends.
